THE CHALLENGE
Native Spanish-speaking students face a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) gap in their language acquisition. The dominance of English-language resources and materials in the STEM field further exacerbates the issue, limiting the availability of quality educational content in Spanish. This linguistic barrier not only impedes comprehension but also hinders effective communication and collaboration. Mi Familia STEM aims to bridge this gap, providing a multi-lingual, engaging resource to students and their families.
THE PROCESS
We worked closely with our clients to design an interface that simultaneously served the goals of being a great learning environment while also being fun and engaging. We began with rough grayscale wireframes, and continued to the full-color designs shown here. This client has an awesome in-house design team that the Emberex design team has been fortunate to work with on many occasions. They provided illustrations, and palette guidance for the project.
GAMIFICATION
Gamification in the app adds an engaging and interactive dimension to the learning process. By incorporating game elements such as quizzes, challenges, and rewards, students are motivated to actively participate and progress through the material. Achievement badges foster healthy competition and a sense of accomplishment, encouraging students to strive for mastery of STEM keywords. The incorporation of gamification not only makes learning enjoyable but also reinforces retention and comprehension of complex terminology in a dynamic and memorable way, enhancing the overall educational experience for Spanish-speaking learners.
ALEXA SKILL
The Alexa skill associated with the app serves as a dynamic complement to the educational journey and enhances the overall educational experience. Through voice commands, students can engage in real-time quizzes, pronunciation exercises, and receive instant feedback, promoting active learning and reinforcing STEM terminology. The skill is designed to cater specifically to the linguistic nuances of Spanish, ensuring accurate comprehension and pronunciation. By seamlessly integrating with the app, the Alexa skill offers a versatile and hands-free approach, allowing students to immerse themselves in STEM education effortlessly.
THE RESULTS
The app and Alexa skill have shown promising results in improving vocabulary retention and comprehension of STEM terminology. Through interactive modules and engaging content, students have indicated they found the language acquisition fun and effective. The app's integration of multimedia elements, interactive exercises, and Alexa skill have fostered an immersive learning experience, enabling students to apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios. Overall, the app has proven to be an effective tool in enhancing STEM education for Spanish-speaking students.
