THE CHALLENGE
This project involved managing large datasets, complex and varied data entry forms and processes, custom reports, and the administration of staff and events. The primary design challenge for a project of this scale was crafting a user experience that is both intuitive and enjoyable—no small feat when designing forms that delight users and filters that perform seamlessly.
From a technical standpoint, developing ATK’s sophisticated system meant overcoming challenges such as implementing advanced security measures, ensuring HIPAA compliance, and designing a robust and scalable database architecture. By adhering to the latest industry standards and best practices, and leveraging cutting-edge technologies, we delivered a secure, reliable, and future-proof solution that meets the highest benchmarks for performance and compliance.
THE PROCESS
This project began with weeks of discovery, which allowed the Emberex team to understand the needs and workflows of the ATK staff - as well as the specifics of their industry. Afterward, we were able to create low fidelity wireframes that helped facilitate ongoing conversations and allowed us to illustrate creative solutions to their everyday work challenges.
After thorough discussion, and shared feedback, we were able to hone in on final solutions that were both elegant and effective.
REPORTING
The ATK team needs frequent access to data on equipment use across their programs. We helped improve on their system of reporting by categorizing reports and building a robust and easy-to-use filtering system, allowing users to quickly navigate to the exact data they need and run their reports on demand. We further simplified reports by visually separating categories of data, and allowing them to be collapsed and expanded to reduce the fatigue that can occur when viewing a full page of numbers.
While most of the reporting requirements for this app were for basic text-style reports, like shown above, we were also able to provide users with a stylish dashboard that features interactive charts as well.
CUSTOM ICON SETS
By creating custom icon sets specific to ATK workflows, we are able to improve users’ ease of work -- as differentiating between large sets of data is easier with visual icons to help out.
THE RESULTS
The ATK team is thrilled with the successful implementation of their new assistive technology database. Designed to meet their unique operational needs, the system replaces an outdated, decade-old legacy platform that was no longer supported. With a modernized UI/UX, enhanced data integrity, and robust error-handling capabilities, the new solution empowers ATK staff to efficiently serve their Kansas customers—individuals who depend on these devices to maintain and improve their quality of life.
