THE CHALLENGE
This project requires that the site maintain and display up-to-date accurate job information for the state of Oregon. Prior to this project’s inception there was no singular place to view this information for the state, as the information was captured and housed uniquely by each school district. This app needed to connect to each district’s data system, and in some cases scrape public websites to collect data.
THE PROCESS
Initial discussions with our client centered around options for data collection from the school districts, as well as what types of data we would display and how best to filter it. We provided wireframes with a few options for data display and filter, and ultimately landed on a left-side filter tray that would allow users to easily open and close the filter functionality and stay connected to the map view. This design came with the added benefit of providing the same user experience on mobile.
HEAT MAP
Our client determined the high-level palette for the Oregon heat map -- that it should be a spectrum of green and red. The app provides the user with a legend that defines the each, specific to each report.
DEEP DIVE INTO DATA
Users are able to toggle between the map view and a list view of the data, and drill in for a closer look at employment specifics by district.
THE RESULTS
The state now has a reliable single source of education employment data. It’s easy to use for anyone who wants quick access to data, and simultaneously has advanced features for users who want to sort and filter data in whatever way they like.
ADMINISTRATION
All the employment data on the site is publicly available. However, district administrators needed a way to edit and upload job listings and add others with editing abilities, so we included a password-protected administration interface for these cases.
